About us

We are named after the 8th continent Zealandia, which encompasses New Zealand and the surrounding oceans. It represents one of the purist environments on earth with deep seas and fertile land. We aim to educate about the important connection between the environment, ethical farming practices, and the resulting nutrition that is served to your pets.

  • Sustainable and ethically-sourced nutrition. We ensure that all our proteins come from farms that are certified with the NZ government. The meat is free-range/run, grass-fed or wild. All the fish we use is classified as sustainable by the International, Marine Stewardship Council (MSC).
  • Farm animal compassion. We care for farm animals as well as pets. We ensure that farm animals have a happy, healthy existence before helping dogs & cats survive with better nutrition. The New Zealand Animal Welfare Act 1999, states that every farm animal is required to be treated humanely and with care. We raise awareness of Responsible Farming Practices.
  • We support NZ birds. By making a Brushtail pet food we are directly assisting in preserving native birds, while making the most of an animal that would otherwise be disposed of. The Brushtail possum was introduced in the 1850’s from Australia as a source of fur for clothing and food. By the 1980s the peak population reached over 50 million. We think including this protein in our pet food is the perfect response to an animal which does not harmoniously integrate with the New Zealand eco-system.
  • Functional & novel ingredients. We use proteins, and supporting ingredients that have a direct benefit to a pet’s health. The high meat content is for energy, including organs for natural vitamins and minerals. Lamb hearts for Coenzyme Q10, and Lamb Liver for Natural Vitamin A. Green Tripe is to assist with digestion. Green-Lipped Mussels for Hip & Joints, and Salmon Oil to help with a shiny coat.

About our ethos

We strongly believe that pets deserve a high quality of protein in their diet and a good quality life in general. At Zealandia we promote pet health, exercise and above all a quality diet. Additionally, we believe that suppliers should be held accountable for the quality of ingredients that they provide in our value chain. We ensure that each supplier is heavily vetted and checked before we commit to purchasing their ingredients.

Each farm animal in New Zealand, by law is required to be treated equally to each other when in the care of farmers. This accountability on the individual farmer has improved the life of all farm animals in particular young bobby calves. All our ingredients are traceable back to the individual RMP which provides a completely transparant approach to what ingredients you are feeding your pet.

Our philosophy

We ensure that all our ingredients are sourced from quality farmers and suppliers that are registered with the New Zealand Government's Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI). It would almost certainly shock the average consumer to know that they are usually feeding their pet, products with often as little as 4% real meat and organs, from questionable sources. Often the reason why pet food can be supplied extremely cheaply is because the farm animals that are providing the protein are kept in poor conditions and health.

At Zealandia we ensure that each of our ingredients are ethically sourced from farms across New Zealand that adhere to government standards. All our suppliers undergo regular visits and spot checks from the New Zealand Government's Ministry of Primary Industries (MPI). These regular quality control measures are one reason why New Zealand is internationally well-respected for the quality of meat produced. A happy, healthy animal produces better quality meat.

It really is truly frightening what is in pet food today. Not only the questionable protein sources but the added chemicals and preservatives that ensures this protein stays fresh. Then there's the flavourings to help your pet decide that they want to eat it. Also there are ingredients which shouldn't even be fed to your pet, like grain for example. A dog's digestive system has been designed to process meat so can cause long-term health problems when a dog is repeatedly fed grain and food with added chemicals and preservatives. They then develop allergic reactions to food that you think would be safe.

We source natural products to ensure that our pets and yours receive the diet that nature intended. Our moist dog and cat food contains ingredients that are beneficial to your pet's health. These 'functional' ingredients include Green-Lipped Mussel Extract beneficial for joints and Coenzyme Q10 that assists in brain health. Our pet treats are 100% natural, using only air-dried meat, tendon and bone. These treats have been designed to help naturally with dental health by removing built up plaque and tartar. Above all, our pet foods and treats are what your animal craves as it is as close to as what nature intended, and is the best alternative to a raw food diet.

All of our ingredients can be traced right back to the RMP that they were produced in. This level of transparency in the pet trade is a real innovation that others will sure to follow. We believe that it is important to know exactly where each ingredient comes from, as it places a duty of care with the supplier to continuously improve welfare conditions for their livestock. We have found a shift in consumers' attitudes towards traceability and Zealandia would like to emphasise this.

There is often clever marketing messages directed towards human food so it makes sense that this trend will eventually be mirrored in the pet food industry. At Zealandia we only source quality ingredients and are proud to say that we are taking a different approach to pet food. By knowing the source of each ingredient we can confirm that the products are either free-range, barn-raised or wild. It is important to us that farmers comply with animal welfare requirements.

Zealandia is available in all good pet food shops and vet clinics across New Zealand, Taiwan, Singapore, Korea, Japan, Malaysia, Indonesia, China & the UAE.
